The inaugural Peter Dixon Memorial Prize was created in 2023, to recognise the long association of former Magistrate Peter Dixon in all aspects of the Tasmania Legal Practice Course (TLPC), including creation of the practical advocacy exercises in the Magistrates Court that all trainees undertaking during the TLPC.
The Peter Dixon Memorial Prize is awarded to a trainee who display qualities that Peter embodied throughout his career including collegiality, willingness to support others, and a demonstrated commitment to developing and improving legal skills. The prize is generously supported by funds provided through the Tasmanian Magistrates Association.
This year the prize was awarded to 2 recipients, Layne Pepper and Hayden Goldsmith, as both demonstrated many of the important qualities, particularly a strong commitment to self-improvement and advocacy skills. Prior to completing the TLPC, both graduated from the University of Tasmania in 2024, Layne with a Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Law with Honours, and Hayden with a Bachelor of Psychological Science and Bachelor of Law with Honours. After graduating from the TLPC both were admitted to practice on 8 August 2025 and their names added to the roll of practitioners in the Supreme Court of Tasmania.
